My name is kaytee, and I am a black sea explorer…
I started developing this textile project in 2018, and have spent nearly two decades working in the textile and fashion industry. I have been living in Black Sea, Mediterranean and Balkan regions for years, actively curating a network of artisans with origins in this part of the world. In this time I have obtained a working knowledge of the many variations of traditional techniques that this geographic treasure trove of cultural diversity has to offer.
My mission with this project is to help these artisans thrive - through both the knowledge of crafts people who have been practicing these traditional methods for years, and with the perspectives of younger generations, who can give new life to the legacy of these visions.
In the current textile market the handcraft sector is rapidly declining. Mass production combined with cultural appropriation has undercut the price points that make it possible for these artisans to make a living wage. As a result of this there is a lack of incentive for younger generations to carry on these traditions - it would be a shame to see them disappear completely. Giving these makers a fair trade market worldwide enables them to live with financial security.
Every single one of these textiles is rooted in the unique customs of their origins. Many of the antique and handcrafted pieces I obtain from artisans are completely original. By investing in these pieces you are not only supporting these cultures and the people that make them - you are also investing in a high quality and keepsake heirloom.
Put your money where your ethics are - after all, we are all just a drop in the sea.
